31 Books Featuring Trans or Non-Binary Characters

31 Books Featuring Trans or Non-Binary Characters

In my last post, I shared a list of YA books featuring trans or non-binary characters, and I wanted to provide a similar list geared towards adult readers. I think there’s a misconception that trans authors only write memoirs, which isn’t true at all! I was able to find books in a variety of genres, though I didn’t seem to have much luck with mysteries- does anyone have a recommendation I should add to the list?

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and I was disappointed to find that a few books I really wanted to feature weren’t available on Amazon, like ‘Beyond: the Queer Sci-Fi and Fantasy Comic Anthology‘, ‘Eric Olafson, Space Pirate‘ and ‘Brew‘. The fact that books are self-published, or published by a smaller, or independent company isn’t indicative of their quality. It’s more difficult to get published and promoted by a mainstream company when you’re part of a marginalized group, but that doesn’t mean those stories aren’t equally worthy of praise and attention.

The links below, though, will take you to Amazon. Disclosure: LiteratureLynx is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. 1. What an awesome list! I only read two books last year about nonbinary characters, but I’d like to read more, so I’m definitely going to check out the sci-fi/fantasy ones. I looked at your teen post too, and some of those books are already on my TBR 🙂 In case you want to check them out to potentially add to your list, one was Labyrinth by Alex Beecroft, about a nonbinary character who considered himself both genders. The other was Wriggle & Sparkle, but I don’t know if that counts since the character was a kraken shifter and literally could turn his body into that of a man or a woman.

    1. Thank you for the additional recommendations! I just looked both of them up, and they both sound like they’re totally different from anything I’ve ever read- definitely adding them to the ever-growing TBR list.
